Taking a bold step into the world of 21st century social media, the pontiff issued the much-anticipated first tweet from his personal account Wednesday morning (December 12, 2012 [12-12-12]), using the handle @Pontifex — meaning “bridge builder” in Latin.

He tweeted his first message as:

“Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.”
